The Transit Master Plan is RIPTA’s 20 Year vision for improving and expanding public transit in Rhode Island to create a more sustainable, equitable, prosperous Rhode Island.

Over the next 20 years, the TMP aims to:

  • Improve Existing Services by providing more frequent service for longer hours, developing a frequent transit network, and increasing commuter rail service
  • Expand Services to New Areas, adding new local routes in undeserved areas, new flex services and new crosstown routes that bypass Downtown Providence
  • Develop High Capacity Transit, including new “Rapid Buses” (akin to the R Line), Bus Rapid Transit, and/or Light Rail
  • Improve Access to Transit by improving pedestrian and cycling connections to bus stops, park and rides, and other first/last mile connections
  • Make Service Easier to Use with new fare payment technology and methods, and better integration of available services.Although approved by the State Planning Council in 2020, the state has left it unfunded since, and today the TMP still lacks any funding commitment.

Take Action

In order to make the TMP a reality, we need increased state funding for RIPTA in the state budget to invest in service expansion. Today, RIPTA has some of the lowest state funding of any urbanized state and cannot afford to make service improvements.

Contact Your Representatives

Find your state representatives here and tell them to support increased state funding for RIPTA, and why RIPTA and the Transit Master Plan matter to you.

This is especially critical before and during the state legislative session from January to June.
